It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Carolyn Jean Officer (née Herman) of
Vancouver, Washington. Carolyn passed away peacefully on April 3, 2024 in Federal Way,
Washington, at the age of 92.
Carolyn was born on May 12, 1931 to Vernal and Goldie Herman. She lived the majority of her
life in the Vancouver area and graduated from Vancouver High School in 1948. She married
Charles “Chuck” Officer in 1952, before welcoming three children, Louise, Susan and Wayne.
She worked for over 40 years in a variety of finance and bookkeeping roles, ultimately achieving
the role of controller before retiring from Container Corporation of America in 1995.
Her primary interests were music, gardening and bowling. She was a featured soloist,
performed in musical theater, taught piano and was a youth choir director. She enjoyed square
dancing, researching family ancestry and was one of the top female bowlers in the Greater
Portland Area. Carolyn enjoyed hosting family and class reunions for many years. She was also
the third generation of members at Salmon Creek Church, where she served as financial

She is survived by her son, Wayne (Cathy); and four grandchildren, Sarah (Rick), Lizzie, Andy
and Rachel. She was preceded in death by husband Chuck (of 55 years); daughters, Louise
and Susan; half-brother, Earl Herman; and half-sister, Beatrice Lawson.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at Village Green Retirement Community of
